Beijing has been a capital for more than 800 years — first the Mongol Yuan, then the Ming and Qing dynasties, and today the seat of government for 1.4 billion people. Six UNESCO World Heritage sites sit inside city limits.

Beijing's recorded history begins with the Ji city of the Western Zhou, more than 3,000 years ago. Through the Warring States Yan kingdom, the Han-Tang Fanyang county, the Liao Nanjing, the Jin Zhongdu, the Yuan Dadu — every era rebuilt the city, never replaced it.

北京的文字史始于西周蓟城，距今三千多年。经战国燕都、汉唐范阳、辽南京、金中都、元大都——每个朝代都重建这座城，没有一个朝代能取代它。

The Ming Yongle Emperor moved the capital here in 1421 and laid out the central axis we walk today: Bell and Drum Towers to the north, Forbidden City in the center, Temple of Heaven to the south. The Qing kept it and added the Summer Palace and the Ming Tombs.

明永乐十九年（1421）朱棣正式迁都于此，划定今日行走的中轴线：南北钟鼓楼、中央紫禁城、南端天坛。清代延续并增建了颐和园与明十三陵。

Tian'anmen has watched the Republic, the founding of the People's Republic, and Reform and Opening — the city that built and rebuilt itself through every chapter of modern China.
